Hi everyone!

I’m Jena. I wanted to introduce myself and tell you a little bit about me and what I do here at Makeup Geek.

I am the Marketing Assistant, and basically, I have about the coolest job a girl like myself could ask for. I get to dabble with all of my favorite things and call it a job. I get to take photos, design graphics and packaging, write for the site, review/test new makeup formulas, and best of all I get to chat with all of you. You are always so cheery and fun, chatting with you, really brightens my day!

Hiking, cliff jumping, soccer, snowboarding, golfing or pretty much anything active and outdoors are some of my favorite things to fill my spare time. Throughout the years, I’ve learned the hard way how to avoid looking like a complete mess while still keeping my makeup routine simple and fool proof. So today, I wanted to share with you some simple tricks to help you look good even when you’re working out! With the hot summer months coming up, makeup can be such a bother as it seems to smear easier and quite literally melt off your face. When you are exercising outside, or just laying out by the pool the key is to have breathable makeup.

This past weekend, my sister and I decided to head to the beach to hike on the dunes and just enjoy the beautiful weather. I knew I’d be sweating after a few steps up those treacherous sandy dunes, and I also knew we were meeting up with some friends afterwards. So, the trick was to keep my makeup barely there but still look decent enough to meet new people later.

photo

You want to find that balance between no makeup at all and wearing too much. The best way is to only apply where you actually need it. The tips I share below are what I follow for days that I’m on the go.  You won’t look your absolute best, but that’s not the goal here.  Save that for girls night out. The goal is to get by without looking like a sweaty mess.

Beauty Tips For The Active/Athletic Girl

Unfortunately, my skin isn’t as clear or as evenly toned as I would like and because I have naturally lighter hair, my lashes and brows don’t show up well on their own. We all have our problem areas, but just because you are working out doesn’t mean you have to let them show. Whether you’re heading to the gym, out for a hike, or kayaking out on the lake, you can still look your best without layering on the makeup. After all, you never know who you’ll run into. ;)

Skip The Foundation

Let your pores have some air when you work out. Only cover up what you have to with a matching concealer, a very light/sheer tinted moisturizer or BB Cream and again only apply where needed. If you wear too much you risk the chance of clogging your pores as you sweat. I prefer just using a concealer stick. It’s more discreet to carry with you for touch ups later. Just use your finger and lightly dab it on any blemishes, blending it into your skin.

Tint Your Lips

Tinted Lip Balm is the perfect way to add a little light weight color to your lips. You’ll forget you even have it on. Having that extra boost of color will help your lips stand out and brighten up the rest of your face with one effortless swipe. My favorite brands are Maybeline’s Baby Lips, and Palladio Tinted Lip Balm. If you choose the right shade, these can double as a blush when you’re in a pinch. Just put a little bit on your finger, dabbing it along your cheekbone to add an extra splash of color.

Regular Mascara. Or none at all

I never wear waterproof mascara. I have found it clumps like mad once wet, doesn’t come off and, to me, is just a pain. I always wear regular mascara, so if I end up going to the beach spur of the moment and want to take it off easily (before it runs down my face) I simply rub my lashes gently between my fingers with a little water. If I know I’m going to be surrounded by water, I skip the mascara altogether. If you absolutely hate going with bare lashes, try vaseline or clear mascara. They’ll define the lashes and help you avoid looking like a raccoon.

Frame Your Face

If you have darker hair/fuller brows, you can afford to skip this step. If you have lighter brows like me, the extra definition really helps. Keep your brows looking natural, just filling in where needed.  It doesn’t have to be anything fancy. I use the Palladio brow pencil in taupe. I personally prefer pencils over powder, but that’s just me. Fill them in with whatever works best for you. By filling in your brows, you are creating a sort of frame to your face, helping your other facial features stand out more.

Braid Your Hair

It’s simple, out of your face and cuter than the average ponytail. Between the basic three strand braid, fishtail, french, and dutch, there are plenty of styles to help you switch it up.

If you are a newbie with braids, to help get you started here is a good tutorial on how to create the fishtail braid.

Stud it up

If you are doing something low key, you can wear a pair of simple studded earrings. It may seem silly to wear jewelry when your playing tennis or whatever it is your doing, but most people won’t even notice them. All they will notice is the overall effect. A pair of sparkly studs will play up your eyes and leave them looking bigger, and brighter.

Wear Shades

Throw on a pair of stylish sunglasses if you’re doing something outside and less intense so you won’t lose them. They’ll protect your eyes from any harsh sun rays, hide any ‘no makeup’ fears you might have and do it all in style.

Smooth Skin

Always, always, keep your skin hydrated. Use your favorite moisturizer and lather up. For summer you can get away with choosing one with a little added shimmer to boost your natural glow.  My skin can be easily irritated so I stick to Cetaphil Fragrence Free as it seems to work best for me.

Keeping your makeup natural and quick to throw on can be such a breeze. I hope you find that following some of these tips are helpful and have you feeling good about yourself. Go out, be active, and enjoy the weather this summer without worrying about how you look!

Spring & Summer Trends 2013 http://www.makeupsgeek.com/articles/spring-summer-trends-2013/ http://www.makeupsgeek.com/articles/spring-summer-trends-2013/#comments Mon, 13 May 2013 18:08:56 +0000 4misstish http://www.makeupsgeek.com/?p=217929 2013trends

Every year trends come and go, and we try our best to stay on top of what is hot for the year. Regardless of whether it’s makeup you covet, fashion, nails or accessories, be assured there is something here for everyone.

HOT COLORS

This year’s hottest colors are by far mint green and peach. The cool tone of the mint and warmth of the peach make this pairing an ideal match. Pair these up on your eyes by creating a soft peach eyelid with shades like Makeup Geek’s “Mango Tango” or “Peach Smoothie” for example, and adding a pop of mint like Makeup Geek’s “Shimmermint” or the gel liner in “Mystic” under the eye. Add the color to your nails, or add a peach or mint green necklace to a shirt of the opposite color. Color blocking is a great way to wear these shades. Do this by wearing a monochrome peach outfit and adding mint green accessories, like a pair of mint green shoes and hand bag or vice-versa. With so many ways to play up these shades you are sure to be in style.

MAKEUP

Metallic

For summer, bare is always beautiful, but so is a pop of color. And if you thought the metallic trend was a thing of the past, think again. This year, silver metallic adorned the runways and lit up the eyes of models worldwide and saw the addition of gold metal to turn up the summer heat. Makeup Geek’s pigment in “Liquid Gold” is right on trend for a look like this. The trick this year is to add bold eyeliner to the top of the eye in a winged shape to give the look even more added drama.

Go Natural

There is no better time to let your natural beauty shine through than in the spring and summer months. Add a tinted moisturizer, a little mascara and a tinted lip balm and you are ready to go.  Don’t forget to make sure they include a little SPF to help protect your skin, and keep your natural healthy glow.  Matte, velvet like finishes replaced dewy skin this year also. The key to pulling off such an effortless look is to keep your brows defined and in shape. This will frame the face and give your look a finished and stunning, graceful look.

natural makeup

Eyeliner

Ever since cat eyes came on the scene, eyeliner has become a new essential in everyone’s makeup arsenal. Last year’s cat eye seems to have been replaced by the retro grunge look. A lined inner rim and smudged color under the eye gives high impact to your look and can be worn softly to take your natural look from day to night. It is also great to add drama to your best high impact looks. Use bright shades like Makeup Geek’s “Electric“, “Fame“, “Poison“ or “Amethyst” for a colorful grunge look or “Immortal“, “Rave“, “Twinkle” or “Mobster” for a more neutral effect.

Lashes

This is definitely the season of the lashes. Whether you prefer fun flirty lashes like the Ardell “Fairies“, dramatic long lashes like the Ardell #115 or spiky rocker lashes such as the Ardell #102, this season they are in full effect. From clumpy and chunky to double up and fierce, make sure you play up your lashes with extra mascara or the addition of false lashes.

Lips

Let the world know that you’re not afraid of color this year by adding a pop of vibrant color to your lips. Hot pinks and neon shades are showing up everywhere along with our much loved reds. The bolder the color the better, all you have to do is throw on your sunglasses and you’re ready to go. Just make sure to keep the bright shade to one area of the face, eyes or lips. To try a assortment of bold shades, try the “Makeup Geek Adventure Pack” to get 5 of this years hottest shades.

Nails

Neon shades for nails, especially in the warmer months isn’t such a shock. But something that has been gaining momentum is the “pale nail”. Shades by Essie like “Blanc”, “Curtain Call”, “Limo-Scene”, “Muchi-Muchi”, make up your pale pinks. For you coral lovers, hues such as “Tart Deco”, “Shop Till I Drop” and “Van D Go” all provide soft washes of coral color that can be left soft and subtle or built up for more color. “Mint Candy Apple” and “Absolutely Shore” lend to the mint green trend that is carrying over from last year.

nailpolish

Hair

Time to dig out our flat irons as it seems straight hair is all the rage this spring/summer. The key to pulling off a great sleek look is to have your hair in its best condition. Invest in a good conditioner and oil that will add shine and nutrients to your hair the heat will pull out. Whether you pull it up, wear it half up and half down or twisted and turned, keeping it straight is the key. Tightly wound knots and elaborate braids also made the list this year as did everyone’s favorite ponytail, just make sure to wear it low this year.

Clothes

Say good-bye to the peplum look that was everywhere last year. 2013 is all about sleek and straight. Peach and mint green is the color combo of choice this year. Regardless of whether you color block or add touches of the shades to accent your clothes. These are the “must have” colors this year. Hot sundresses add heat to the warm months as well as color blocked black and white maxi dresses.

Remember, you don’t have to spend a fortune to look great. Great pieces can be found anywhere and to fit any budget.  Having a few items that can be mixed and matched in your closet is an easy and inexpensive way to be on trend this season.

The Best Lipstick Shades For Summer http://www.makeupsgeek.com/articles/the-best-lipstick-shades-for-summer/ http://www.makeupsgeek.com/articles/the-best-lipstick-shades-for-summer/#comments Thu, 02 May 2013 18:29:02 +0000 Marlena http://www.makeupsgeek.com/?p=216953 lipstick-graphic

It’s not always all about the eyes!

Sometimes, it’s about the pout. Lipsticks can be the perfect way to add an extra punch of color to your everyday look. Especially with these hot summer months coming up, when temperatures sky rocket the makeup literally seems to melt off your face, that fancy eye makeup just won’t do. Lipsticks are quick and easy to throw on, instantly brightening your complexion creating an effortless yet “put together” look. Not to mention, with the right lipstick shade it can actually intensify the color of your eyes and help slim your face.

Here are some of our favorite bright and beautiful lipstick shades for spring and summer.

Make It Last

Lipsticks are fairly discreet and easily thrown in your purse for touch ups, but let’s be honest, even that can be a hassle.  You may not have the time to re-apply your lipstick when you need to nor should you have to.  Here’s a great tutorial on how to make your lipstick last so you will have one less thing to worry about! This same technique can be used for any shade as long as you have a matching lip liner and lipstick. Softer shades can also use a little gloss overtop if you like. :-)

Don’t let yourself be intimidated by color, try something new and let your lips be the center of attention this summer. A great way to try some color is with our “Lipstick Adventure Pack“. This has 5 of our brightest and  boldest shades that are just waiting for you to test them out.

Lots of Ideas for Prom Makeup http://www.makeupsgeek.com/articles/lots-of-ideas-for-prom-makeup/ http://www.makeupsgeek.com/articles/lots-of-ideas-for-prom-makeup/#comments Fri, 26 Apr 2013 19:08:47 +0000 Jena-Garnett http://www.makeupsgeek.com/?p=216166 Prom-Makeup-graphic

Prom season is here and in full swing!  We wanted to share a few simple but always stunning makeup looks to help you spark some ideas for the perfect look to match your dress, eyes and overall style. Most suggestions for Prom makeup is neutral, and barely there. Where we love a good neutral eye, we also think that since Prom is your chance to go all out with your looks, why not throw on some color! We will share a few examples on how to wear color without looking like a bad 80′s ad. Whether you win the crown or not, follow some of these guidelines and quick tips, and surely you will be looking like a Prom Queen in no time!

Add A Little Drama!

If you have a simple dress, you can afford to add some extra drama to your look with your makeup. Here are a few options for more dramatic looks.  Don’t be afraid to add a punch of color or some glitter!

Color

makeupbyhilary_stpat

The trick to wearing a great colorful look is to keep the brighter shade on the lid and blend out with neutrals. Here the artist used a combination of products for this fun and festive look but we will provide you with some Makeup Geek duplicates to help you recreate the look. Begin by gently patting the shade Sea Mist over the lower part of the eye coming up slightly past the crease. This is a lovely blue/green color that has a slight shimmer to it so it works perfectly for this look. For the inner corner use the shade Pixie Dust and sweep the color up above the crease beginning at the inner corner and into the crease coming in 1/2 of the way. Make sure and put a small amount of the same shade under the inner 1/3 of the eye also. Now go in with a matte brown color, here the artist used the color Tease from the Naked 2 palette, but Latte would be a great shade as well. Feather the color on the outer 1/2 of the crease making sure to blend out any harsh lines. Bring the same shade under the eye from the outer corner coming in to where the lower lashes begin. You may have to go back in with the shade Pixie Dust and touch up the green. Line the lower waterline with an blue/green liner, here the artist used Urban Decay’s 24/7 liner in Mainline. Curl you lashes and add your favorite thickening mascara. To finish the look put on a pair of thick lashes like Ardell’s #109.

Glitter

c18cfa41915e9f86d144adee1a040abc_450

If you want to add sparkle and glamour to your look then this is definitely the one for you. Begin by patting a medium grey shade like Stealth on the lower part of the eyelid making sure to stay below the crease. Run the same shade under the entire length of the eye as well. Next, using a fluffy dome brush and windshield wiper motions, place a darker grey like Graphite, or for a darker look you can use Corrupt, and blend the color into the crease. Use a smaller dome brush and a bit of the lighter grey and use to blend the color out slightly. You want to make sure you don’t bring the color up to high, you just want to eliminate any harsh lines. Then take flat, stiff brush and dip it into your favorite glitter (L.A. Splash Renaissance is ours at the moment) and pat gently onto the lid. To help avoid glittery fallout, hold a piece of tissue under your eye while applying the glitter.  To complete this stunning look, add a pair of lashes like Ardell’s Demi Wispies to the top of your eyes and a few individual lashes on the lower lashes as well to add extra drama.

Simple and Sweet

The perfect eyes to pair with a princess dress, keeping it sweet, simple and elegant.

Sweet

b06a84c40ef735733fb27cb476483627_450

This sweet look is perfect for anyone who wants a charming and elegant look for their special night. With a fluffy dome brush, use a warm pink like Simply Marlena and work the color into the outer part of your eye keeping the majority of the color on the outer part. Sweep the color in slightly allowing it to fade as it comes into the crease. This color will warm up the shades we are going to apply over it. Next, with a flat, stiff brush and pat a shimmery white like Ice Queen over the lower part of the eye. Use the excess shadow on the brush and place under the brow bone as our highlight. Now go in with a soft brown like Latte and pat over the lower lid where the pink and white eyeshadows meet and up into the crease slightly. To add some depth to the look, go in with a darker brown like Mocha and gently sweep the color into the crease making sure not to cover the pink. You want to be able to see the pink peeking through the brown. Use the same dark brown and a small brush to line the upper lashline keeping the color close to the lashes. Bring the same dark brown under the eye as well very softly just to connect the top and bottom of the eyes. Place a shimmery light color like Shimma Shimma in the inner corner to open the eyes and make them appear brighter. Line the lower waterline with a white liner like Makeup Geek’s Cottontail. To finish, curl your lashes and add a good mascara. For an added touch of drama and romance, add a pair of lashes like the Ardell Romantic.

Simple

photo-51-550x587

This striking look is simple to do and catches the attention of everyone around you. Begin by placing Gold Digger on the lower lid and bring the color up slightly past the crease. Run the same gold shade under the entire length of the eye as well. With a fluffy dome brush, sweep a soft brown like Latte on the outer 1/2 of the crease and blend out the color making sure to avoid any harsh lines.  Place the same brown under the outer 1/3 of the eye. Wipe off that same brush really well and use a color close to your skintone to help blend out the lines and as a highlight under the brownbone. Use the gel liner in Immortal to create a winged liner on the top of your eye and to line your upper and lower waterlines. Curl your lashes and sweep on a couple coats of mascara. Add a pair of great lashes like Ardell’s Demi Luvies to finish this gorgeous look. (If you want a more intense gold color on your eyes, begin by using a gold base on the eye like the Maybelline Color Tattoo in Bold Gold or any gold base)

 Classic Cat Eye

Simple Cat Eye paired with a good lipgloss, how could you go wrong? This look is timeless and will look good with almost any dress you choose. Amp up the drama by flaring out the wing a bit more.

Cat Eye

Picture-108661-550x456

To create a good Cat eye I’ve found, starting with the wing, and working your way to the inner corner of your eye works best. I would suggest using a gel liner, as it goes on smoothly and is easier to create the fine lines with, perfect for a winged eye. Check out the quick tip below for some extra advice on how to apply. (Cut Crease Kitty Cat Look Step-By-Step)

 Kitten Eye

DSC_0826-001This Kitten eye has all elegance of the cat eye, but with less drama. If you’re not quite that bold just yet, take the same approach as explained in the Cat eye but stop your line 3/4ths or ½ of the way to the tear duct. Bring the line down a bit on the lower lashline if you would like. This technique will elongate your eye and make it look bigger.

Quick tip: If you apply a pencil liner first you can create a smooth line easier, using it as a guideline when you add the gel or liquid liner. Sort of like coloring in the lines. When using gel liners, the brush makes all the difference. I would suggest using a bent liner brush. It has the perfect shape and angle to easily reach your eye and applies the liner effortlessly, it’s about as close to fool proof as you can get.

Not your average liner

If you are wearing a fun bright dress or really bold patterns, and still want a splash of color in your makeup look without it feeling too overbearing, keeping it neutral but wearing a colored liner is a great option. Here are a few examples.

Upper Lashline

P1050951-550x540

This simple and sultry look has a perfect pop of color to catch everyone’s attention. To create this look, sweep a color that is a shade or two darker than your skintone over the lid. Here the artist used the shade Beaches and Cream. Use a fluffy dome brush and sweep the shade Mocha in the crease making sure to feather out any harsh lines. You may have to go back in with the first shade and blend out the lines. Use a small dome brush and place Bada Bing in the outer part of the eye to add depth to the look. Run the same dark brown under the eye. Now for that liner, you can use any shade as the possibilities are limitless. Here, Makeup Geek’s Electric was used.  Starting with the wing, and working your way to the inner corner of your eye. Curl your lashes and add a couple coats of your favorite mascara to finish this amazing look!

Lower Lashline

boldnbeat-550x539

For this look, use a neutral champagne shade like Shimma Shimma or Glamorous on the lid, staying under the crease. Use a fluffy dome brush and a soft brown like Latte and sweep into the crease blending out any harsh lines. For your pop of color line the lower water line with whichever shade will compliment your dress and eyes best. To add a bit more depth, you can apply a small amount of black eyeliner on the upper lash line, this step is completely optional. Lastly, throw on a few coats of your favorite mascara or a great pair of lashes and viola!

Quick Tip:  To make your liner stay in place and last longer, apply a sheer layer of a similar colored eyeshadow right on top to help it set. This also helps tone it down, creating a softer look. Or on the contrary, pick a shimmer/glitter and make it pop even more!

If you are still new to makeup or unsure how/where to apply it, here is a great video where Marlena shares some of her favorite teen makeup products and how to apply them.

Summer Tag! http://www.makeupsgeek.com/articles/summer-tag-video/ http://www.makeupsgeek.com/articles/summer-tag-video/#comments Sat, 13 Apr 2013 00:21:26 +0000 Marlena http://www.makeupsgeek.com/?p=215358 summer-tag

Hello Makeup Geek! Today I have a fun summer tag for you. I really like this one a lot as it has some really great questions in it. You all know I love summer and all the fun things that go with it so I wanted to do this to share with you some of my favorite summer times accessories. Later, I will do a different video for some of my favorite summer makeup products to help you decide which ones to take with on the go this summer.

So enough of that, let’s get to the fun questions.

Question: What’s your favorite summer nail polish?

Answer: As you all know mint green and peach are really hot right now so I am loving this peach shade by Essie in “Tarte Deco”. (Amazon)

Question: What is your favorite lip color this summer?

Answer: Revlon Kissable Lipstain in “Lovestick”. I usually don’t like lip stains since they can feel drying on the lips but these are very pigmented and don’t dry out your lips. Definitely a must have product for the summer. (Amazon) (eBay)

Question:  Show us your favorite summer dress.

Answer: I do a lot of fashion post on Instagram so be sure and follow me to see what I wear each day. (makeupgeektv) I love this maxi dress because it’s so bright and colorful. I got this one at Macy’s for $48.00 and it’s by “American Rag”  I just wear this with a jean jacket and some flats or when it gets to hot just on its own.

Question: What is your favorite summer accessory?

Answer: My flats by “Aldo”. I wanted something comfortable that I could wear everyday and would look great with everything. I like the touch of gold on the top that gives a funky vibe :-)

Question: What summer trends are you most excited about this year?

Answer: I would have to say the color combination of mint green and peach. At first I wasn’t sure when I saw it as it reminded me of the 80′s. But I found some really cute things in the shades that helped me embrace it and really like it.

Question: What is your favorite summer candle?

Answer: It’s by Bath & Body Works in “Cranberry Peach Bellini”. I got this in the fall and I love it. It smells AMAZING!!

Question: What is your favorite body spray and perfume?

Answer: Bath & Body Works Body Spray in “Wild Peach Poppy”. I love the packaging on this and the scent is great. It’s not to overwhelming with just a hint of peach.

Question: What is the weather like where you live in the summer?

Answer: I live in Sacramento California so it’s very dry and very hot. In July the high will actually hit about 105 or 107 degrees so it gets really hot and humid.

Question: What is your favorite thing about the summer?

Answer: I love going outside! Whether its jet skiing, swimming, going for bike rides at night when it’s a little cooler to bar-b-quing, I love everything about summer!

Question: What are your plans for summer vacation?

Answer: My mom and I are going on a cruise to the Mediterranean. I have never been on a cruise before so I am really excited. Her family is from Sicily so we wanted to go check out where her family is from and visit all the exciting places.

So that’s it for the summer tag video. I will leave this open for you all so you can do your summer tag as well and let me know what your favorite things are for this time of the year. :-) I hope you all are doing great!!

XOXO,

Marlena

The Best Eyeshadow Colors for Brown Eyes http://www.makeupsgeek.com/articles/the-best-eyeshadow-colors-for-brown-eyes/ http://www.makeupsgeek.com/articles/the-best-eyeshadow-colors-for-brown-eyes/#comments Thu, 04 Apr 2013 18:35:41 +0000 Marlena http://www.makeupsgeek.com/?p=203214 For you brown eye babes out there, I wanted to share some tips on what eyeshadow colors look best on you.  To be honest, since brown is a neutral color, almost any color will make them pop.  The trick is finding which colors look best with your hair and skin color as well.  Generally, teals and purples look best on brown eyes but as you can see below, the other colors can work too.

Here are some pictures of each eyeshadow color on brown eyes so you can experiment on yourself to find YOUR best eyeshadow color.  Makeup after all is an art, not a science, so anything goes :)

Purple Eyeshadow:

Purple is the most universally flattering eyeshadow color to wear (other than neutrals) because it goes well with any hair, eye, or skin color.  Purple is especially great for brown eye babes as it is a contrasting color on the color wheel, so it makes the eyes pop!  I find the best purples are blueish tinted ones as it contrasts the warmth of the brown.

To recreate this look using Makeup Geek eyeshadows use Mandarine and Sensuous on the upper outer crease. Blending them into Wisteria on the lid and using Sensuous again on the outer lashline.  On the inner corner use Shimma Shimma and blend it upward into the inner crease meeting Mercury.  Beaches and Cream is used to blend out any harsh lines and as a highlight just under the brow bone.

Blue Eyeshadow:

Blue eyeshadow can be tricky to pull off (hello 80′s!), but if you wear a royal blue along the lashline, it looks amazing on blue eyes.  The coolness of the blue contrasts the warm brown, while also making the whites of your eyes appear brighter.

To recreate this look use Makeup Geek’s Shimma Shimma to add some extra shine by the tear duct.  On the inner corner, using Peach Smoothie, blend into Moondust in the crease.  On the center of the lid, Mermaid is blended out into Neptune in the outer corner.  On the lower lashline Shimma Shimma, Peach Smoothie and Moondust are used.  To line the eye, use Makeup Geek’s Gel Liner, Electric.  Beaches and Cream is used just under the brow bone as a highlight, and to blend out any harsh lines.

Yellow/Orange Eyeshadow:

If you have hazel eyes instead of dark brown, wearing gold eyeshadow can bring out the yellow tint in your eyes.  For this fact, gold isn’t my favorite color to wear, but it can still look nice if I pair it with a dark purple or navy blue.  The best golds for brown eyes are more bronze tinted or even copper.

Gold Digger is used on the inner corner.  On the lid is Creme Brûlée, blended into Glamorous and Cocoa Bear in the crease.  Use Bitten, Glamorous and Cocoa Bear on the outer v.  Glamorous is used to line the lower lashline.  Line the waterline in Makeup Geek’s Gel Liner in MobsterBeaches and Cream is used just under the brow bone as a highlight, and to blend out any harsh lines.

Silver Eyeshadow:

Because silver is such a cool toned color, it provides a beautiful contrast against the warmth of brown eyes.  Any silver color looks amazing- platinum, metallic silver, or even gunmetal.   Just be careful wearing silver under the lower lashline if you have dark circles under your eyes, as this can enhance them slightly.

To recreate this Silver look using Makeup Geek products use Mercury on the lid blending outwards into Corrupt in the crease and also on the outer v.  On the lower lashline, blend from the outer corner using Cinderella.  Beaches and Cream is used just under the brow bone as a highlight, and to blend out any harsh lines. To line the waterlines, use Makeup Geek’s Gel Liner, Immortal.

Brown/Neutral Eyeshadow:

Brown eyeshadow is my least favorite color to wear as it blends in so much with my brown eyes.  But no one wants to wear bright purple makeup every day to work!   The solution: wear a bit of purple, teal, or even green just under the lower lashline or in the waterline to make your eyes pop a bit.  This little splash of color is just enough for daytime without being over the top.

To recreate this look, use Makeup Geek’s Latte and Mocha in the crease and outer v.  On the upper outer crease use Cocoa Bear, blending it out into Beaches and Cream just under the brow bone.  Also using Cocoa Bear on the center of the lid, blending it to the inner corner where a little bit of Shimma Shimma is used.  To line the eyes use Makeup Geek’s Gel Liner in Immortal.

Green Eyeshadow:

Green is another eyeshadow color that looks amazing on brown eyes.  If you have hazel eyes, it makes them appear more green.  My absolute favorite green though is teal green- anytime I wear this color, my eyes really stand out and look vibrant!

To recreate this look using using Makeup Geek’s products use Shimma Shimma in the inner corner by the tear duct.  On the lid use Pixie Dust, and blend into the crease using Twilight.  Using Corrupt on the outer v and Mermaid on the lower lashline and Beaches and Cream under the brow bone. Use the gel liner in Immortal to create a soft winged liner on the top of the eye to complete the look.

Here’s some final tips for brown eyes:

  • To make your eye color pop, wear purple or teal as these are contrasting colors to brown
  • Silvers and blues can look beautiful too, but be careful wearing them under the lower lashline as they can enhance any dark circles under your eyes
  • Brown eyeshadow tends to blend in with brown eyes, so wear more of a silver-brown (think taupe) or even peach.

Which eyeshadow color is your favorite?  Do you notice your brown eyes “pop” more with certain colors?

My New Closet Tour! http://www.makeupsgeek.com/articles/my-new-closet-tour/ http://www.makeupsgeek.com/articles/my-new-closet-tour/#comments Mon, 25 Feb 2013 23:16:11 +0000 Marlena http://www.makeupsgeek.com/?p=210345

Hello my amazing Makeup Geeks. Today I am going to take you on a tour of my ultimate girly girl closet. This actually use to be the room I shot my videos in but with the new office space I was able to transform it into the closet I have always wanted. This is the ideal space for me to come in and do my makeup, pick out my clothes and get ready for the day or just to escape from a long day. So, let’s get started on this look around my new closet.

To organize my closet and keep my clothes in order I got some wardrobes from IKEA. These are tall and it allows me to keep my purses that aren’t used much out of the way. I am able to find my clothes much easier and they aren’t bunched up together. To keep my boots out of the way I hang them on hook hangers to keep them straight and in order. To keep my shoes organized and in good shape I purchased a pull out shoe rack that hold my wedges and keeps them off the floor. I also have the same shoe racks on the other side to keep my heels arranged neatly.

  • PAX Wall Wardrobe Frame – $100.00 - IKEA
  • PAX Corner Section Frame – $190.00 – IKEA
  • Threshold Hangers (for boots) – Set of 6-3 Pack – $23.99 – Target
  • Pull Out Shoe Rack – $50.00 – IKEA
  • KOMPLEMENT Drawer – $40.00 – IKEA

To organize my bracelets and some of my jewelry I use organizers that I got at Michael’s. If you use coupons and watch for sales you can get a really good deal on these. I jsut sat these on my old shoe racks that I had. I hung my scarves on a rack I got at IKEA but you can find them almost any place. Since I love my accessories I have a lot of belts so I got this belt rack on Amazon that keeps them well organized and easy to get to.

  • Darice 12×12″ Black Velvet Triple Bar Jewelry Stand – Michaels
  • InterDesign Tie and Accessory Rack – $7.45 – Amazon

I also have a space to do my makeup with a desk and my Starlet Lighted Tabletop Vanity mirror which I love. This mirror is wonderful for applying your makeup and has different light settings and looks amazing. Inside my desk I have dividers from Target that hold my makeup and keeps things well organized. I don’t have a lot here at home since many times I do my makeup at work. I also found an amazing way to store my necklaces and keep them from getting knotted up. I purchased a big cork board from Marshall’s but you can find these at T.J. Max and many office supply companies. I use small hooks that you can find at Target or Home Depot, to hang each necklace on. I get most of my necklaces from Charming Charlie, this is a great place to find super cute jewlrey.

  • Starlet Vanity Mirror – $299.00 – Vanity Girl Hollywood (*these are no longer available in pink) See my review of this here.

To hold my rings I bought some small containers from The Container Store but anything with small compartments to hold rings will work great. These wardrobes can be customized for each person so I added these pant racks to hang my pants. This makes finding my jeans and dress pants so much easier.

  • KIMPLEMENT Pants Hanger – $20.00 – IKEA

To add some glamour to my room I added a black ottoman and a white fuzzy rug. You can find these at different stores but it pays to shop around to find a great price on both.

  • Valletta Velvet Tufted Bench – $299.0 - Target

And that’s my new closet! I love this new room and I hope it gives you some great ideas for making your very own girly get-away.

The List of MAC Dupes for Makeup Geek Eyeshadows http://www.makeupsgeek.com/articles/mug-mac-dupe-list/ http://www.makeupsgeek.com/articles/mug-mac-dupe-list/#comments Tue, 19 Feb 2013 16:43:18 +0000 Marlena http://www.makeupsgeek.com/?p=158724

While I’ve been using Makeup Geek shadows more often in my tutorials, I don’t expect all Makeup Geek viewers to have all the shades at their disposal — and even those that have bought some of the Makeup Geek shadows may still have some suitible colors in their MAC collection.

This list is for those of you coming from the MAC world and either want to migrate your collection to Makeup Geek, those that want cheap alteratives to MAC, or those that want to find alternatives to the colors I used in a video.

I think we did a pretty good job of listing dupes I was aware of, but if you see some that MAC dupes that are missing, please feel free to list them in the comments below and we’ll try to update this list.   Also, if you think the dupe listed isn’t close enough, or if you know of a better one, let us know as well :)   Thanks!

7 Ways to Look Younger Using Just Makeup! http://www.makeupsgeek.com/articles/7-ways-to-look-younger-using-just-makeup/ http://www.makeupsgeek.com/articles/7-ways-to-look-younger-using-just-makeup/#comments Tue, 01 Jan 2013 02:09:39 +0000 Marlena http://www.makeupsgeek.com/?p=3658 We all want to look our best, and by our “best” we usually mean younger. There are a lot of ways to help slow down the aging process. Eating lots of fruits and vegetables, using sunscreen to help block harmful UV rays, and drinking a lot of water are just a few.  Getting the right amount of exercise also helps slow down the aging process.

Some women have the idea that the more makeup they apply the better they will look. But the truth is, using too much makeup can settle into fine lines and wrinkles that we acquire as we get older. This makes them stand out instead of covering them up. However, with the right tricks, turning back the clock can be as easy as opening your makeup bag.

1. Skip the Powder

As we age, we tend to lose the natural glow of our skin. You would think that powder, being lightweight and non-greasy would mean it’s a necessity but that’s not always the case. Powder can easily embed itself into the fine lines and wrinkles on your face, especially around your eyes and that will only exaggerate them. Also, adding powder to the skin can make it look cakey or dull.  Instead, opt for a foundation that is lightweight or a tinted moisturizer. This will help even out your skin tone without making it feel greasy and allow your skin to shine through.

My top pick: NARS Sheer Glow Foundation  (Amazon) (eBay) (Sephora) (Nordstrom)

2. Apply a Creamy Pink Blush

Just like face powder, a powder blush can set into the fine lines and wrinkles that occur over time. It can also make your skin appear dull. Opting for a cream blush adds a glow to your cheeks without overdoing it. Make sure you pick the right shade for your skin tone no matter if you have light, medium, or dark skin. Using a pink color will add a nice flush to your cheeks that will give them a more youthful appearance. Just remember to use clean fingers when patting the cream blush to your cheeks to avoid getting any germs into your pores

My top pick: NYX Cream Blush in Boho Chic (Makeup Geek Store)

3. Curl your Lashes

Curling your lashes immediately makes the eye pop. With time, the eyelid begins to droop and eyelashes begin to flatten. You need to give the appearance of everything being pulled up. Curling your lashes gives the appearance of your eyes being more open and wide therefore looking more youthful.  Remember to apply a couple coats of mascara, but even if you don’t make sure you curl those lashes.

My top pick: Shu Uemura Lash Curler  (Amazon) (eBay)

Also: Tarte Picture Perfect Eyelash Curler (Amazon) (eBay)

4. Wear Plumping Lipgloss

Thinning lips is another sign of aging. Although you can’t turn back the clock and make your lips full like they once were, you can help give the effect of fuller more supple lips by using a plumping lipgloss. This will also help your lips feel fuller and appear thicker than normal. You will know when you have a good plumping lipgloss by the slight tingle on your lips. This lets you know it is working. You should however, avoid using dark colors as this will give your lips a shadow effect and actually make them appear smaller.

My top pick: Bare Escentuals Buxom Lipgloss in Bambi (Amazon) (eBay)

Also:  NYX Plump It Up Lip Plumper (Amazon) (eBay)

5. Conceal your Dark Circles

Whether it’s from lack of sleep, heredity, or age, having dark circles under your eyes will make you appear older than you actually are. Dark circles actually make your face look as if it is being drawn downward. The trick to correctly concealing them is not to use your normal concealer. Use a concealer that is peach or salmon color as this will help to counteract the blue color that most under circles tend to be. To add some brightness under the eye and make them appear more youthful, gently pat on a concealer over the corrector. Use one shade lighter than your natural skin color.  This will give automatically give a more youthful appearance to the eyes.

My top pick: Bobbi Brown Corrector in Peach (Amazon) (eBay) (Sephora) (Nordstrom)

Also: Makeup Forever Concealer Palette (Amazon) (eBay) (Sephora)

6. Wing Your Liner

Just like curling your eyelashes, winging out your liner can give an instant lift to your eyes. As we age, our eyes begin to somewhat droop.  By winging out your liner you are instantly giving your eyes the appearance that they are being pulled upward. Many women find that creating a winged eye is hard to do. The reality of it is having the proper tools and making sure to use a gel liner.  Use an angled eyeliner brush like the Makeup Geek Bent Liner Brush which sells for $3.79 USD. If you are uncertain how to use one of these brushes or how to achieve that cat eye, or winged liner effect, check out our video “How To: Use An Angled Liner Brush“.

My top picks: Makeup Geek Gel Liner in “Immortal” and Makeup Geek Bent Liner Brush

Also: Bobbi Brown Gel Liner in “Black” (Amazon) (eBay) (Nordstrom)

7. Wear Light Shimmer Shadow

Applying a good, bright, shimmery eyeshadow to the inner corner of your eye like Makeup Geeks Shimma Shimma or Bling, will help lighten the eyes. Think of that area of your eye as a cave, it gets darker as we age. Putting a shimmery, light color in that area will open up the eyes and make them appear more light and make you appear well rested and awake. You can also apply a small amount under the brow as a highlight color to help brighten the eye as well. Just make sure you don’t place it all over the eye as too much glitter can have the opposite effect. Just use a shimmer eyeshadow in the inner corner near the tear duct and under the brow.

My top pick: Makeup Geek Eyeshadows in Shimma Shimma (Pan Version | Compact Version) or Bling (Pan Version | Compact Version)

Looking younger isn’t hard at all, and with these 7 small tricks no one will ever have to know your real age. If used correctly, makeup can make you look and feel younger, feel more vibrant, and bring out your inner Makeup Geek!

How to get Shiny, Healthy Hair http://www.makeupsgeek.com/articles/how-to-get-shiny-healthy-hair/ http://www.makeupsgeek.com/articles/how-to-get-shiny-healthy-hair/#comments Fri, 07 Dec 2012 14:10:50 +0000 Marlena http://www.makeupsgeek.com/?p=146023 Regardless of whether prefer your locks short or long, or you have hair that is thick or thin, curly or straight, having hair that is healthy and shiny never goes out of style. Since we spend so much of our time, money and energy on our hair, it only makes sense that we get it looking its best. We love to curl, straighten, pull up, let down and color our hair in every way our imagination will let us. The are no limits when it comes to our hair, and it really is an extension of who we are. So it only makes sense that keeping our hair looking and feeling its best is something we all try to achieve. Below are the tips and tricks I have learned since on my journey to weightloss. Hopefully, these will help you attain the kind of hair that every woman will covet.

Take Vitamin E and Biotin

In my journey to lose weight, I’ve become an avid taker of vitamins. Vitamin E, Salmon Oil supplements, and my multi vitamin have been my staples in trying to maintain good health (and hair). Vitamin E helps increase the uptake of oxygen into the cells of the body–thereby increasing the circulation to the scalp, while biotin promotes healthy hair growth.

Drink Plenty of Water

Water is the number one thing your body needs to function- your hair included!  Drinking plenty of water not only flushes out toxins, but it keeps your hair moisturized.  I know its hard to put down the Pepsi, but try switching out just one drink a day for a bottle of water- it really makes a difference in the health of your hair and skin.

Avoid Bleaching or Over-styling your Hair

Bleaching, styling, and using any heat products on your hair can dry it out and cause damage.  Whenever I wash my hair, I make sure it is at least 70% dry before I use a hair dryer- the less heat you use on your hair, the healthier it stays.  (I usually just do my makeup while my hair naturally dries, then will go blow dry and style…)

Eat lots of protein

A diet high in lean protein is amazing for the body (it’s been my key to losing weight-  sad to say this Italian girl had to cut back on her pasta :(  ) Since hair is protein, it makes sense that in order for it to grow that you need to eat protein.  Some favorites of mine:  roasted chicken, beans, and nuts.

Protect your Hair

To keep that lovely mane shiny, you need to protect it! Never use heat tools on your hair unless you put a protectant on it first- my favorite is the “It’s a 10″ miracle spray.  It makes my hair SO shiny, soft, and smells oh so good…

Here’s Paige’s review on it:  http://www.makeupsgeek.com/reviews/hair-products/review-its-a-10-leave-in-conditioner/

Use a Hair Mask

Once a week I apply a hair mask and wear it overnight.  I look oh so sexy with my hair in a bun with plastic wrap over it- haha!  My favorite mask is the Moroccan Oil Hair Mask- it smells like vanilla and coconut and makes my hair super soft.

Wash your hair 3-4 times a week

I admit, this one was hard for me as I used to be a wash-my-hair-every-day girl… But once I started washing my hair every other day I have noticed it hasn’t been quite as dry (plus it saves me time- oh yeah!)  The ends of your hair need to get that natural oil, so use a boar bristle brush and gentle brush your hair before bed to spread that oil to the ends.

Eat dark green veggies

Dark green veggies are amazing for your hair and body- they provide essential nutrients in keeping you healthy.  There’s a reason your momma told you to eat your spinach…

I hope these little tips help you all achieve the shiny healthy hair that you want!  I know it sounds so cliche, but what you eat really does affect your outer appearance.  Just a few changes in diet can help your skin and hair, plus it makes you healthier and happier!

XOXO,
Marlena
