I’m an 80′s fan (I am an 80′s baby ;-) ) but I don’t want to rock big hair, blue shadow and pink lipstick! Well, not all together anyways :-) ! Naturally I have straight as a ruler hair, so I love to add volume and texture. Crimping is a fun and cute way to do it!

  • To start off this look I parted Nicola’s hair into six sections using butterfly clips. Nicolas hair is pretty fine so I only used six if you have thicker hair you might want to add more sections to make it easier to move through your hair.

  • Starting with the bottom section, I used ‘Its A 10 Miracle Spray’ as a heat protectant. It is very important to use a heat protectant in your hair especially if you have any chemicals, colored or lightened  hair. And this hairstyle does take a lot of heat to achieve. So I highly suggest this step!

  • Part the section in to two sub-sections, and clip the top sub-section up so it doesn’t get in your way.
  • The size of the barrel you use determines how big or small the waves in your crimp are. I usually go for bigger barrels as I like more of a loose look.

  • Open the clamp of the curling iron and place it as close to the scalp as possible and hold it for about 15 seconds. I like to hold the bottom of the hair for more control opposed to letting it hang down.

*TIP: To avoid creases close to the scalp, and add volume,  I slowly turn the curling iron inwards as I make the first impression!

  • The next step is to turn the curling iron upside down. So the clamp is facing the opposite way of the last step. Place hair into clamp (as you did in the last step) and press down right where the end  of the last impression ended.

  • Repeat this step alternating with the clamp up and down until you reach the bottom of your hair.

  • Spray it lightly with hairspray, we used Ausie Hairspray. I don’t like to over spray it and make it look a little too “finished” I like it to look more movable.
  • Repeat these steps with every section and sub-section of hair. This hair style does take a bit of patience!

There you go! A crimp with a looser feel! I love doing my hair like this and I hope you guys try it and enjoy it as well!

Products Used:

  • To add more of a Boho feel we twisted in to tiny sections along the part of her hair and secured them with bobby pins.

Easy Braided Updo Tutorial http://www.makeupsgeek.com/tutorials/easy-braided-updo/ http://www.makeupsgeek.com/tutorials/easy-braided-updo/#comments Mon, 23 Jul 2012 03:11:25 +0000 http://www.makeupsgeek.com/?p=178958 We all have our days when we are in a rush. I love this hair tutorial because its really easy and you can do it really quickly. A ponytail can get boring! Seriously as a working woman and mommy I don’t have a day that I’m not running out of the door. It’s also a very wearable hair-do that can be casual or you can dress it up.

1) We had our models hair curled first. If your hair is naturally straight it can be harder for rubber bands or braids to stick in your hair. Having your hair curled will also give your hair more volume.

2) To achieve this hairstyle I parted her hair into five large sections.

3) I then braided those sections and secured it with a clear elastic.

4) To give your hair more volume tug at the sides of the braids to loosen them up.

5) Grab one of the bottom side sections and bobby pin it up to the opposite side.

6) Do the same with the opposite braid overlapping the braid you just pinned.

7) Bring up the very bottom braid and place or wrap it above the other braids, securing it with the bobby pins.

8) Now you grab the front braids and cover the loose ends of the bobby pins, tucking the ends of the braids in. You also overlap these braids. Add some hairspray to have hold on your up-do.

There you have a quick updo that takes five or less minutes but looks great!

Summer Hairstyle: Boho Twist http://www.makeupsgeek.com/tutorials/hair-tutorials/summer-hairstyle-boho-twist/ http://www.makeupsgeek.com/tutorials/hair-tutorials/summer-hairstyle-boho-twist/#comments Sat, 07 Jul 2012 19:39:25 +0000 http://www.makeupsgeek.com/?p=168372 Hey Makuep Geeks! I wanted to do a hair tutorial that was fun, flirty, and easy! I always get compliments when I wear my hair like this, and it seriously takes me about 5 minutes- perfect for summer.   I love this hairstyle because it can be done with any type of hair, and you can dress it up or dress it down.

Mariel came over with her hair already washed and dried. I prepped her hair using the Its a 10 Miracle Spray. And parted her hair down the middle. I then curled it using my Hot Tools 1″ Curling Iron.

*You can chose what size of a curling barrel that you want to use. We chose a bigger barrel because we were going for a loose and flowy look.  You can also chose to do this hairstyle with wavy hair.

1:  I started the first twist half way between her ear and the middle part. I twisted her hair upward toward her middle part and bobby pinned it to secure the hair.

2:  I then moved to the opposite side of the part and did the same twist. Twisting it upward towards her middle part.

3:  The next step is to grab another section starting right above the ear to right under neath the previous section. Twist that in the same direction (towards the middle part) and secure that section.

4:  I pinned the hair so that the back of the hair was still left out, this is optional!

5: The next step is to create a loose  low pony tail at the nape of the neck.

6: I then bobby pinned the ends of her hair to make a bun! You can do this as lose or tight as you want! You can also leave pieces hanging out for more of a messy feel! Its totally up to you and the look your going for!

And viola- a cute yet extremely easy up-do! I even added a flower for more of a bo-ho feel!

I hope you guys enjoy this hair style as much as I do :)

Step Three: On the opposite side of your hair, take a chunk of about the same amount as your last one ( We’ll name this Section 2) and pull it in the opposite direction as Section 1.

Step Four: Section 2 should be overlapping section 1, as showed above.

Step Five: Take Section 2 and bobby pin it under Section 1.

Step Six: Take a new section (Let’s name it Section 3) of hair from under Section 1 and pull it over Section 2.

Step Seven: Take Section 3, and bobby pin it under Section 2.

Step Eight: Repeat this 2 more times (or more if you desire) to achieve this look!

Hair Tutorial: Retro Waves http://www.makeupsgeek.com/tutorials/hair-tutorials/hair-tutorial-retro-waves/ http://www.makeupsgeek.com/tutorials/hair-tutorials/hair-tutorial-retro-waves/#comments Thu, 24 May 2012 21:16:21 +0000 http://www.makeupsgeek.com/?p=168377 If you are looking for a simple way to add more glamour to your look than this is it! A throw back to the roaring 40’s, this stunning creation will add allure and sophistication to your look. This timeless do will also add a vintage touch to anything you wear. Fans of old style glam will relish the chance to nail down the perfect way to achieve this epoch hair-style. Below we are going to show you exactly how to achieve this remarkable look in just a few easy steps.

Products used:

  • Its a 10 Miracle Spray – Retails for $20.00 USD – $30.00 USD in Ulta depending on the size you purchase. Also at eBay and Amazon, prices vary. (Amazon | eBay)
  • Hot Tools Professional Curling Iron with Multi-Heat Control – $34.65 USD at Ulta. This is also available Amazon and eBay. You can use a 1-2 inch barrel depending on the size curls you want. We used a 1 ¼ inch barrel on our model.  (Amazon | eBay)
  • Kenra Volume Spray 25  - Available at www.kenra.com 1.5 oz – $7.00 USD, 10 oz – $17.00 USD, 16 oz – $24.00 USD. This can be found cheaper on Amazon and eBay. (Amazon | eBay)
  • Kenra Thermal Styling Spray #19 – Available at www.kenra.com 2 oz – $7.00 USD, 10 oz $16.00 USD, Liter – $32.00 USD. This can be found cheaper on Amazon. (Amazon)
  • Scunci No Damage Elastics  (Amazon | eBay)

Retro Waves

  • Start with clean, dry hair. Our model Mariel already had her hair washed and dried before we stared.
  • Before I do any hairstyle that I blow-dry or use any thermal tool on, I use a heat protectant. For Mariel’s hair I used the Its A 10 Miracle Spray and sprayed it through all of her hair. But any good heat protectant will work nicely.
  • Next I parted her hair into six sections. This makes it easier to work through hair, and Mariel’s hair is pretty thick so this made it a lot easier and quicker.

  • Next I took a section from the bottom of Mariel’s hair out and sprayed it with the Kenra Styling Thermal Spray.  You can use a styling spray as well, but I used this mainly to have more hold in her thick curls. If you have thin hair your may want to stick with using a styling spray.

  • Next I grabbed a about a fourth of the section of hair that I had pulled out (vertically). I wrapped the hair (starting at Mariel’s roots) around the outside of the curling iron, starting from the handle or clamp downward.

  • To keep a hold on her waves I sprayed her hair lightly with hairspray.

  • I continued curling pieces through the bottom sections of her hair.
  • Move to the middle and top section, curling 1/4 pieces of each section. Hold the hair as tight as you can to the curling iron with out burning yourself. I usually hold it for about 20 seconds.
  • Continue this process until you have completed your whole head.
  • For more hold on your waves you can lightly spray over your hair one more time. If you want them to be looser you can run your fingers through your waves or use a wide toothed comb to separate them.

And there you have it, a perfect and timeless look that’s easy to recreate. It’s the easiest way to add this breathtaking and enduring look to your wardrobe. It’s perfect to wear out, going to a party or pairing up with your favorite pair of jeans. Try this look on for yourself and see what you think. We are sure you will love it just as much as we do!

Curved Dutch Braid to Messy Bun Tutorial http://www.makeupsgeek.com/tutorials/hair-tutorials/curved-dutch-braid-to-messy-bun-tutorial/ http://www.makeupsgeek.com/tutorials/hair-tutorials/curved-dutch-braid-to-messy-bun-tutorial/#comments Mon, 21 May 2012 18:06:22 +0000 http://www.makeupsgeek.com/?p=166508 After our success with the Katniss Everdeen Hair Braid and the Fishtail Braid / Mermaid Braid tutorial, Brittany and I are back with more hair tutorials.

It’s hard to find a quick and easy hairstyle for those hot summer days, but we’ve got your votes and made a tutorial just for you! The braid keeps those fly-away’s back and the bun keeps the rest of the hair off of your neck! Don’t be intimidated! It is easier than you think! Great for a day at the beach or dress it up for a night on the town, either way this look can be just for you!

Here are 20 easy steps to create your own dutch braid into a messy bun! We hope you enjoy it!

Step One: Part your hair over to your favorite side.

Step Two: (You may include your bangs if you want them out of your face or you can wear them down like Amber in the photos below.) Grab a chunk of hair right next to your part.

Step Three: Split the chunk of hair that you grabbed and split it into thirds to get the braid started.

Step Four: (You are going to dutch braid just like in the last hair tutorial we did for you guys, the Katniss braid. Make sure you watch for the difference in this tutorial though to get the right effect of this braid.) Take piece one and go under piece two/the middle piece. Piece one will now turn into the middle piece.

Step Five: Take piece three and put it under piece one/the middle piece.

Step Six: Grab pieces one, two and three with your left hand. (Here’s a TIP! Grab piece one with your left pinky. Grab piece three with your left ring finger. Grab piece two with your left middle finger.)
Using your right pointer finger pull up a chunk of hair from your hair line or back of your bang line.

Step Seven: Join this new chunk of hair to piece two/the front piece or piece toward the hair line, all of this is now piece two.

Step Eight: Take piece two and put it under piece three/the middle piece. (You can now start to see the dutch braid be created.)

Step Nine: (This is where the difference is between this braid and the Katniss braid comes into play. Pay careful attention to get the full effect of this hair style.)
Make sure you DO NOT grab extra hair to join with piece one, as if you you were going to complete a french or dutch braid. This part of the hair style pulls in the effect of the loose, messy, curved braid to the bun.
Take piece one and put it under piece two/the middle piece.

Step Ten: Repeat steps 5-7. Grab a chunk of hair, join it with the front piece, put it under the middle piece then put the furthest piece (towards the crown of your head) under the middle piece.
As you go down your hair line you can grab bigger and bigger chunks of hair to get the braid to look fuller.

Step Eleven: When you get to you ear lobe with your braid tug upward on hair that is above the braid to get the messier look.

THIS IS HOW YOUR BRAID SHOULD LOOK SO FAR!!
KEEP REPEATING STEPS 5-7

Step Twelve: As you grab more and more hair to put in the braid and as you go along the back of your head make the pieces longer pulling them up towards the crown of your head before joining it to the braid for the more curved effect.
REMEMBER TO ONLY GRAB AND ADD HAIR FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE BRAID/FROM THE HAIR LINE

Step Thirteen: Once you have reached the opposite side of your head that you started the braid from stop picking up hair and just braid a regular braid to keep the dutch braid in form while creating the messy bun.

Step Fourteen: Grab the extra hair that is left over and not in the braid yet with your left hand while holding you braid in your right hand.

Step Fifteen: Combine that extra hair you just picked up with the braid. You now have a pony tail getting ready to be created into the messy bun. At this point you may create any messy bun that you prefer doing and skip steps sixteen through eighteen or keep following along to help create Ambor’s messy bun.

Step Sixteen: Amber’s messy bun (steps 16-18) – Start by putting the pony tail holder around the pony tail like you would put your hair in a regular pony tail, but don’t pull the hair/pony tail all the way through. (The excess hair will be pinned up later with bobby pins.)

Step Seventeen: Twist your pony tail holder to secure the slightly pulled through pony tail and squish the hair to create the messy bun look.

Step Eighteen: Wrap your pony tail holder around and around your bun until the pony tail holder is too tight to wrap around your bun again. You aren’t done yet though!

Step Nineteen: Using bobby pins- grab random parts of your bun and secure it to your hair where you would like your bun to spread out at. We ended up using 10-15 bobby pins to secure the bun tightly. (HERE IS A TIP! Bobby pins hold your hair better when you put them in upside down and crisscross them. (Sometimes you can hear them grind again each other when you crisscross them. That’s means it is secure!)

Step Twenty: Sprits with hair pray and voila! You are finished and ready for school, work or to go out with some friends!

Fishtail Braid / Mermaid Braid Step-by-Step Tutorial http://www.makeupsgeek.com/tutorials/hair-tutorials/fishtail-braid-step-by-step-tutorial/ http://www.makeupsgeek.com/tutorials/hair-tutorials/fishtail-braid-step-by-step-tutorial/#comments Wed, 11 Apr 2012 16:47:55 +0000 http://www.makeupsgeek.com/?p=164312

After our success with the Katniss Everdeen Hair Braid tutorial, Brittany and I are back with more hair tutorials.

With summer right around the corner, and the warmer weather on the way, we all want a little something to spice up our look while keeping us cool at the same time. The fishtail braid is a perfect way to pull your hair back, yet keeping a classy elegant look going on at the same time! Here are 20 easy steps for you to achieve this lovely braid!

Step 1: Pull hair back with your pointer fingers, as if you were going to wear your hair half up/half down.

Step 2: Split gathered hair into two sections

Step 3: Pull a chunk of hair from section two; this will be piece three for the time being.

Step 4: Cross piece three over section two.

Step 5: Join piece three with section one. Piece three is also now section one.

Step 6: Pull a chunk of hair out from section one; this will be piece four for the time being.

Step 7: Cross piece four over section one.

Step 8: Join piece four with section two. Piece four is also now section two.

Step 9: Hold both sections one and two in your left hand. Using your right pointer finger pull a chunk of hair up from the right side of your head from the hair hanging down; as if you are pulling hair to french braid.
Step 10: Cross this new piece over section two.

Step 11: Join this new, crossed piece with section one.

Step 12: Repeat steps nine through eleven, only hold sections one and two in your right hand and using your left pointer finger pull a chunk of hair from the left side of your head from the hair hanging down; as if you were french braiding.
REPEAT STEPS 9-12 ALTERNATING SIDES!

Step 13: Pull sections one and two away from each other as if you were tightening a pony tail. (Don’t worry about the end result being too tight. This kind of braid always finds its way to become loose.)

Step 14: Keep repeating steps nine through thirteen and tightening until you can’t pull any more hair hanging down and tighten.

Step 15: Just like in the beginning of the tutorial you are going to pull a chunk of hair out of section two, only from the back/underside of section two.

Step 16: Cross this new piece of hair over section two.

Step 17: Join the new piece of crossed hair with section one.
Step 18: Repeat steps fifteen through seventeen only pull the piece of hair out of the back/underside of section one. Cross over the new piece over section one and join it with section two.

REPEAT STEPS 15 THROUGH 19 ALTERNATING SIDES!

HERE IS A TIP! Make sure to keep tightening the braid, otherwise it will fall too much

Step 19: Continue fishtail all the way down and secure with a pony tail holder.

Step 20: Towards the bottom of the fishtail braid where you stopped pulling pieces from the hair that was hanging down may be a little too loose. Using bobby pins clean up any loose hairs that you want tucked in.

All Done! Click to Enlarge :)

Voilà! You now have a fishtail braid! You can even add colored hair extensions  to add a little spice into the braid! Happy Braiding!

Step-by-Step: Hunger Games – Katniss Everdeen Hair Braid http://www.makeupsgeek.com/tutorials/hair-tutorials/step-by-step-hunger-games-katniss-everdeen-hair-braid/ http://www.makeupsgeek.com/tutorials/hair-tutorials/step-by-step-hunger-games-katniss-everdeen-hair-braid/#comments Thu, 22 Mar 2012 18:53:32 +0000 http://www.makeupsgeek.com/?p=159958

With the release of the much anticipated movie The Hunger Games, we decided to do an inspired hair tutorial on how to do the braid that Katniss wears in the Arena. It’s also known as a dutch braid, the only difference is it’s curved.

The dutch braid is extremely simple, it’s the same thing as a French braid the only difference is you are pulling the pieces of hair under the braid, instead of over the braid like you would in French. Below are steps on how to get the look yourself! Happy Hunger Games!

STEP 1.) Take a Chunk of Hair, as little or big as wanted
STEP 2.) Split into three smaller Chunks (1,2,3)

STEP 3.) Take Group 1 and pull it under group 2.

STEP 4.) Then take Group 3 and Bring it under Group 1.

STEP 5.) You are now going to add hair into group 2.

STEP 6.) Once you added the hair, you are going to then take group 2 and bring it under group 3.

STEP 7.) You are going to add Hair into group 1. Add in hair to the group that is being held between her fingers. Then Bring that under the braid.

STEP8.) Keep adding hair into each group like you would for a french braid. Pull the groups under the braid and then over. You are basically reversing a french braid.

STEP 9.) Continue this the entire way down.

STEP 10.) Make sure you pull the hair tightly so it stays in place.

Voila! You now have the Katniss Braid! Happy Hunger Games, and may the odds ever be in your favor!

Oh! and don’t forget to spread the love of Makeup Geek and the Makeup Geek Eyeshadows

DIY: Hair Tinsel http://www.makeupsgeek.com/tutorials/diy-hair-tinsel/ http://www.makeupsgeek.com/tutorials/diy-hair-tinsel/#comments Wed, 28 Dec 2011 04:33:13 +0000 Marlena http://www.makeupsgeek.com/?p=143856

If you’re anything like me, you like a little “bling bling” to celebrate your New Years!  It could be through accessories, makeup, and even hair.  I found these hair tinsels on Amazon to play around with something different for my hair- they’re super inexpensive, fairly easy to apply, and are temporary.  I picked up the color “copper brown” so they blend in my hair a bit (no, I’m not looking for shiny pink hair- it may clash with my outfit ;) )   Even celebrities like Beyonce have been seen wearing these.

My only complaint with these tinsels is they can slide out of your hair if you don’t tie them well enough or if your hair is super fine.  It also takes a bit of practice to tie them in, so if you can recruit a friend to help it will be easier.  They come in several different colors ranging from blue to purple to even gold.  I still think these are super fun to wear!

Price:  $12.95

Where to Buy:   Amazon  (not sure if they carry at Sallys…)

5 Easy Back to School Hairstyles http://www.makeupsgeek.com/tutorials/5-easy-back-to-school-hairstyles/ http://www.makeupsgeek.com/tutorials/5-easy-back-to-school-hairstyles/#comments Thu, 25 Aug 2011 03:12:18 +0000 Paige http://www.makeupsgeek.com/?p=16503

We all have those mornings where we are rushing out the door, which makes it really good for our outfit to look like we didn’t get dressed in the dark, our makeup to look like a 5 year old didn’t draw it on, and our hair to not look like we just walked through a wind tunnel. So as long as you can manage to get your outfit and make up looking right, I’ve got you covered with these 5 easy hair tricks and tips.

The Twist and Pin

Start off this look with using an anti frizz spray, such as, It’s a 10! (Amazon) (eBay) After misting this all over your hair, start taking random sections of your hair, twist them, and then pin them out of the way. Repeat until you get the desired look!

The Fake Blow-Dry

After prepping your hair with a heat protectant, once again, you can use It’s a 10 (my favorite miracle product), quickly  blow dry your hair so that your hair is only a little damp. Then, wrap your hair into a bun and secure it down with one or two bobby pins. While on your way to school or work, leave it in, then once you’ve arrived, take out the bun and shake your hair out. This will give you a blow-dried look with minimal effort. The higher the bun, the more volume your hair will have, the lower the bun, the less.

The Headband

This is an under-rated product. A headband is the perfect tool to save yourself in a hair disaster. Just throw a head band on, and the rest of your hair into a bun, ponytail, or braid. For a fancier look, try a jeweled or beaded head band.

The Messy Side Braid

Some people say they aren’t good at braiding, so the messy side braid is perfect. Throw your hair to the side, take three sections and start braiding! It doesn’t have to look perfect! After you’ve thrown a ponytail to fasten the braid together, pull random section of the braid to loosen it and give it a messier effect.

The Concealed Ponytail

Tame all your hair in a low side ponytail by using some Redken Water Wax.(Amazon) (eBay) Once your hair is secured into a low side ponytail, take an outside section of the hair and wrap it around the ponytail holder, securing it with one bobby pin underneath.

Voila! There you ladies go! Each hair trick should take you no more than 5 minutes to do, but will pull your whole look together so that you never leave your house looking like a complete wreck ever again!
