I know eye primer is a must for vibrant, long-lasting colors so what about mascara primer? Does it really make a difference?

    It depends.

Yes, mascara primer does really make a difference. What that difference actually is and how much is going to come down to individual products and personal preference. Now here comes the depends. Personally, I feel that regular mascara primer doesn’t do anything I can’t achieve with a few coats of tubing mascara and a little patience. However, that said, there’s some lash primers/bases which double as lash serums. In that regard I think they’re worth a look.

For me, lash primers are pointless. It wouldn’t achieve anything a couple of coats of mascara already does.

The only thing I suggest is to try one for yourself and see if it does anything for you.

Whether or not you should buy one and which kind really comes down to what it is you want to get from it, which you’ve not mentioned so far.

Oh whoops. I want a dramatic full lash without clumps, which I think is a common desire.

I have never had any luck with lash primers. By the time you get the primer on it’s dried up and makes a mess of your mascara leaving it clumpy looking and making those dreaded “spider lashes”.  If using 2-3 coats of a good mascara (and you really have to try quite a few to find one that is perfect for you) hasn’t worked you may want to just use false lashes or look into having lash extentions.

Some want length, some want volume, and some want both.

I would suggest looking into a tubing mascara with fibres, and if you’re going to buy a secondary product consider a lash serum.

I agree with shelly and 4misstish.  I haven’t had any luck with lash primers.  I’ve also found that they leave my lashes looking more clumpy and spider leg-like, which is not attractive IMHO.  Try Maybelines false lash or their new mega plush lash.  They have great brushes that keep the lashes separated and not clumpy while giving you full long lashes.  You can also try lattisse. I’ve been using it for a year and I love my long full lashes.
